AFTER NYSC WHAT IS NEXT?

Congratulations to the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) batch B, stream one (1) members who just passed out. Now that you have hung the jungle boots and folded the khaki, life haste  just begun as a Nigerian graduate. You just realize that there is no more allawee, PPA and CDS.

The big question is “now that your service year is over, what is next”? Now you are going to realize that life is not a bed of roses. Things will change! Sometimes it will be a step up for greater and bigger things in life. In some cases life may step on your toes, there will be times when it looks like your dreams will never come true or that God does not answer prayers anymore. In all never give up but keep moving.

Sometimes you are going to find that, friends and relatives who have said ‘send me your cv when you graduate so I place you somewhere’, would now tell you that he or she has very little power to do anything for you. In some cases, you would also find out that your parents may not care anymore; you will realize that your parents, who provided for your every single need back in the higher institution and sometimes during your service year, will no longer do. They are either focusing on your siblings in school or easing off the stress of child raising. So, all they do now is pray and hope you get a job, so you too can come and take care of them.

Now that you have passed out, develop yourself in all areas and always have a plan. While you are looking for a job, find something doing like small scale business, develop your talent and skills, and make an impact in people’s lives. You can start that small business and grow it into a mega business thereby becoming an employer of labor. Sell yourself, not the title of your degree. There is no limit to what you can do. Simply start up with a business idea, structure a business plan and work on it. The problem is some have the money but no ideas while some have ideas but no money. It is expedient that one has a clear-cut idea of what will become of his/her life and career after the National service year.

We are in a society where except few; parents and guardians believe that training their kids or assisting their wards end as soon as they graduate from the higher institutions. It might sound vague to some but it is an undeniable reality that the moment after national youth service most graduate are left alone in the struggle for survival in career and otherwise. It is an obvious fact that the expectation of every graduate is that, after the one year of national service, he or she will get a good job and start living a comfortable life. The truth is that, this is not always the case of most individuals. So, in all sincerity, we would all agree to it that there is a great need for a 'plan B', considering the present state of the nation’s economy.

If the above is true, where can you start from as a fresh graduate?

Here lies the answer; at this moment start implementing the plans you had during your service year. Find something legitimate in line with your plans, talent or potential and explore it. The bottom line is to try as much as possible to avoid being idle after the service year. Every individual is created with an inherent ability to do something with ease and do it better than any other person. Look deep into yourself and find out what your gift is and make use of it. While doing all of these as fresh graduates you should not forget to search for job.

Waiting for a job is very wrong, you have to be involved. Search for job on the internet, on the streets, in the national and local Newspapers. No job is too small for a start; there are some graduates who are very selective when it comes to some certain jobs because they feel it does not befit their status. They assume that being a graduate means that their jobs must be prestigious. I would like to state here that there is dignity in labour. I have seen graduates who are into dry cleaning even on a small scale. There are graduates who earn low income, not because they are okay with the income but because they know that it is better than doing nothing. Also, they do not want to become a liability to those around them. These small jobs can stand as a stepping stone for greater jobs.

With determination, hard work, focus and God’s grace, every ambition can become a reality. Nothing beats a soul who has resolved to succeed. Connect with people; give out your CV/Resume to those you know could help you. Never under estimate anyone, let as many people that you come across as possible know what you studied.

It takes a lot more than being a graduate to succeed. It takes planning; plan B, focus, discipline and determination to succeed. Being without a job is one of the worst position one can find him or herself after NYSC. Friend, with a little discipline and vision, impending joblessness and the accompanying depression can be avoided. Be smart, like the Boys Scout Motto: Be Prepared.
