As Christians, we are to possess the same attribute of salt
as in Matthew 5:13. Salt has two purposes in the Middle East in the first
century. They are:
1. TO PRESERVE: Salt was being use for preserving food
especially meat which could spoil in the desert environment. Believers in
Christ are preservative to the world, preserving it from the evil inherent in
the society of ungodly men whose evil natures are corrupted by sin (palm 14:3,
Rom 8:8).
2. FLAVOR ENHANCER: Salt was also used then, as now, as a flavor
enhancer. In same way, salt enhances the flavor of the food it seasons. The
followers of Jesus Christ stand out as those who enhance the flavor of life in
this world. Christians, living under the guidance of the Holy Spirit and in
obedience in Christ, will inevitable influence the world for good, just as salt
has a positive influence on tin flavor of the food it seasons.
HOW CAN WE DO THIS: Where there is STRIVE, we are supposed to
be peace makers. Where there is SORROW, we are to be the ministers of Christ
(Isaiah 61) i.e. binding up wounds. Finally, where there is HATRED, we are to
exemplify the love me God in Christ. Returning good for evil (Luke 6:35). Also
we are to comfort all who mourn i.e. to console those who mourn in Zion (the
church) to give them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, and the
garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they may be called trees of
righteousness.
By this act, our society will be a better place.
